The Black Pearl is my homage to Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, a historic African-American enclave conceived during the era of segregation. This work encapsulates the nostalgia of spending summers in this hidden gem, lovingly referred to as The Black Pearl. This town came to life in the 1930s as a sanctuary for Black doctors and lawyers, one of whom was my own grandfather. The heart of this project lies in our cherished beachfront home, a living testament to Atlantic Beach's unique history and resilience, remaining largely untouched since the 1960s.
This work speaks to Atlantic Beach's defiance of conventional beachfront development, preserving an untouched coastline, free from towering hotels and resorts. From my porch, the ocean's timeless melody echoes, a soothing reminder of the town's enduring spirit. Today, as a high-rise condo/hotel looms on the horizon, my project aims to preserve the town's identity and the memories of my childhood. The Black Pearl serves as an urgent plea to safeguard Atlantic Beach's unique character and cultural heritage from the impending transformation.
